Frequently Asked Questions

How do I preserve my leaves?

I use a botanical press to flatten and dehydrate the leaves. The process takes approximately 1-2 weeks. Once they are pressed, the leaves are much like paper.

Will my leaf painting last a lifetime?

Absolutely! Once they are pressed, the leaf is like a textured piece of paper. In a lot of ways, a leaf is like paper. Paper often comes from trees, leaves come from trees. Before starting the finished painting, I prime the leaves with two coats of acrylic gesso. This seals the leaf and provides a barrier between the raw leaf and the painting layers. I also paint with professional grade acrylic paints, and seal the finished paintings with acrylic varnish for extra protection. The leaves are mounted with archival, acid-free materials. This ensures that the piece will not degrade over time.
