The Story of The Nut Gatherer
In the golden hush of autumn, when leaves danced softly through the air, Harper the squirrel could often be found bustling about beneath the old oak trees. She was a gentle soul with a heart as warm as her knitted acorn-patterned sweater, and she spent her days gathering nuts—not for herself, but for the elder squirrels who no longer could.
From dawn to dusk, Harper filled her woven baskets with chestnuts, acorns, and hickory nuts, her paws quick and practiced. When her baskets were full, she’d return to her cozy hollow, where the scent of baking acorn bread filled the air. She’d grind her own flour, stir in honey, and spread freshly made berry jam atop each loaf before wrapping them in soft moss bundles. Then, with a smile, she would deliver her care packages to every elder neighbor in need.
Harper gave so much that she often forgot to rest or even eat herself. But her kindness didn’t go unnoticed. From her tree hollow nearby, Mouse had watched Harper’s tireless work day after day. One crisp evening, Mouse gathered the woodland neighbors together and told them how Harper’s gentle heart had fed the forest with love.
The next morning, as sunlight spilled through the trees, Harper awoke to find her doorstep brimming with baskets: gifts of nuts, berries, and warm notes of thanks from all her friends. Tears sparkled in her eyes as she read each one. For the first time in many days, she sat down, shared a meal made with love, and felt the warmth of being cared for in return.
And from that day on, whenever Harper gathered her nuts, her heart gathered joy as well.
