The Story of The Hearthside Feast

The Story of The Hearthside Feast

Every year, when the first frost dusted the pines and the air grew sweet with woodsmoke, Bear prepared for his favorite tradition of all: the Hearthside Feast. Lit by the warm glow of his great stone fireplace, his cozy den became the gathering place for friends who traveled from every corner of Pine Ridge Forest.

Bear bustled about his kitchen, humming cheerfully as he crafted his famous mushroom pot pie. He chopped chanterelles, stirred a silky broth, and folded in herbs gathered from the meadow. On the counter beside him, Chipmunk worked with great seriousness, cracking and crushing acorns to sprinkle over the pie for a golden, nutty crust. “Perfect as always,” Bear said, giving Chipmunk an approving nod.

By late afternoon, the woodland friends began to arrive, each bringing a dish of their own. Moose ducked her antlers through the doorway, cradling a steaming pot of her beloved pumpkin soup, spiced just right and velvety smooth. Otter rolled in next with a plate of freshly gathered river mussels, still cool from the water. Soon, the den was filled with chatter, laughter, and the mingling aromas of woodland’s best flavors.

When the feast was ready, they gathered around the long wooden table. Candles flickered, casting dancing shadows on the walls as stories were shared and paws reached across the table for second helpings. Outside, snowflakes drifted softly past the windows, but inside, warmth radiated from every heart.

After dinner came the annual event everyone eagerly awaited: charades. Rabbit was unbeatable, though Hedgehog gave her quite the challenge this year. Laughter echoed through Bear’s den long into the evening.

And as the fire crackled low and the last of the dishes were cleared, Bear looked around at his friends and thought, This is what makes winter beautiful.
